It starts with an otoscopic look inside each ear to confirm the canal is clear and the eardrum is healthy. A small foam oto-block is placed first, then a soft silicone material that sets in a few minutes and captures the exact contour of your ear canal. The impressions come out cleanly and the appointment runs about 30 minutes.

From there the impressions go to the manufacturing lab in the material, filter, and color you selected. With normal use and basic care, a quality set commonly lasts three to five years. The silicone is durable, and most filters can be swapped if your exposure changes. The usual reason for replacement is not failure but fit: weight changes and the slow reshaping of ear canals loosen the seal over time, and a loose plug protects nobody.
