Every removal at Hughes Holistic Audiology happens under direct visualization, meaning the canal stays in view through a magnified scope the entire time rather than being worked on blind. The tool is matched to the wax in front of us: a fine curette for dry or near-canal buildup, gentle suction for softer or deeper wax, and low-pressure irrigation when that is the more comfortable route.

Cotton swabs push wax deeper into the canal, where it packs against the eardrum and becomes harder to reach, which is the opposite of what you were going for. They also scratch the thin skin of the canal easily, and pressed in too far they can injure the eardrum itself. Over-the-counter drops sometimes soften wax, but they are a poor answer once a blockage has already formed.

It varies quite a bit from person to person. Most adults' ears clear themselves and never need help.
